The PTA Difference | |||||
The distinction between National PTA and locally based parent groups is the strength and influence of a national organization. PTA is a grassroots organization with the clout to effect federal and state legislation to support PTA's mission and Purposes. The result is that ALL children benefit. To accomplish its goals, PTAs not only work together, they team up with principals, teachers, school boards, community groups, and business leaders to bring programs and resources to their schools. |

PTA is a grassroots organization made up of parents, teachers and others around the state who have a special interest in children, families and schools. "PTA" stands for Parent-Teacher Association and PTSA stands for Parent-Teacher-Student Association. Any person who supports the objectives of the PTA is welcome to become a member. |

| What is the Mission of the PTA? | ||||||
| To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children. Also to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation. | ||||||
To promote the welfare of all children in home,
school, community and place of worship. |
| What does PTA do? | ||||||
PTA's and PTSA's work for children, meet together, study problems, support teachers, volunteer in schools, attend workshops on parenting and become informed on issues regarding children. It has been proven that children have a better chance of achieving in school when parents are involved with the school. PTA is one way to become involved. As a PTA member, you are more informed and involved as a parent. The benefits you receive as a PTA member are opportunities to meet and talk with other parents who have the same worries and concerns. PTA also provides educational opportunities at the local and state level. |

| What is the Florida PTA? | ||||||
Florida PTA is the largest statewide volunteer organization working exclusively on behalf of children. Founded in 1921. The state office provides different services to the local PTA Units. Every president of a local PTA unit receives a subscription of the Florida PTA Bulletin, a Florida PTA Handbook, which serves as a guide to local units in writing bylaws, understanding parliamentary procedure, determining the duties of officers and committees, preparing budgets, and conducting PTA activities and information for every officer and committee chair. A Leadership Conference is held every summer with workshops of interest to everyone involved in the PTA. An Annual State Convention is held each fall for the purpose of selecting the legislation platform for the year and the elections of officers every two years. Every local PTA is encouraged to attend and take part. |
